Sumi also fixes the other classic redaction mistake. A black highlight in Word or a PDF editor often leaves the text underneath, ready to copy. Sumi redraws every page as an image with the box painted in, so there is no text left to copy.

Why "Sumi"?

Sumi is the Japanese black ink that cannot be erased. It is what Sumi puts over your personal data: a mark that stays, with nothing left underneath.

Is it really free?

Yes, every feature is free for documents up to 10 pages, with no account. Pro removes the page limit for €5 a month.

How can a website work without uploading?

Your browser is a capable computer. The PDF reader, the text recognition and the AI model all run inside the tab, the same way a web game runs on your machine.

Can redacted text be recovered from the download?

No. Every page is redrawn as an image with the boxes painted in, and the new file contains nothing else: no text layer, no fonts, no metadata, no attachments.

What can it miss?

Automatic detection helps but is not perfect, especially on poor scans and unusual formats. That is why nothing is removed until you have reviewed it, and why you can search words and draw boxes yourself.

Which files does it accept?

PDFs up to 200 MB, and images (PNG, JPEG, WebP). Photos are stripped of hidden metadata such as GPS location.
