Redact a bank statement before you send it
Landlords, lenders and visa offices often ask for bank statements, but they rarely need every line. Sumi helps you black out what they don't need, on your own computer, and gives you a copy where the hidden details are gone from the file.
What people usually hide on a bank statement
- the account number or IBAN, often all but the last digits;
- card numbers printed on the statement;
- transactions that reveal health, religion, politics or someone else's details;
- names of other people in transfer descriptions;
- your address if it isn't required;
- balances on accounts not related to the request.
Keep the parts the recipient must verify, such as your name, the bank and the income lines.
How to do it with Sumi
- Drop the statement PDF into the app. Statements downloaded from online banking usually have real text, so no text recognition is needed.
- Check the IBAN and Card number groups. Sumi only lists IBANs with a valid checksum and card numbers that pass the Luhn test.
- Statements list many dates. They appear as "Other date" and are kept by default, so the list stays short.
- For a transaction line, use Draw box across the row, or type the merchant name into "Redact a word or phrase everywhere".
- Preview, then Redact & download.
How to check the result in 10 seconds
Search the downloaded file for the first digits of your IBAN: no result. Try to select a transaction you covered: nothing selects.
Limits
Statements longer than 10 pages need Pro. If you only need to share a few months, download just those months from your bank first.
Questions
Can I keep the last four digits of my account number visible?
Yes. Switch the IBAN finding to Keep, then use Draw box over the part you want hidden.
Is the statement uploaded anywhere?
No. Sumi runs in your browser, and you can check it with your Wi-Fi off.
What about a paper statement I scanned?
It works. Text recognition runs on your device before detection.
