Redact handwriting and signatures
Text recognition reads printed text well and handwriting poorly. That leaves a gap: a phone number scribbled in a margin or a signature at the bottom of a form can slip through. Sumi closes it by finding text it can't read and boxing it, so you decide whether to black it out.
What usually needs covering
- signatures on contracts, forms and letters;
- handwritten notes in margins: phone numbers, names, comments;
- filled-in form fields written by hand;
- stamps with names or addresses;
- initials next to corrections.
How it works
Sumi uses a small text detector that runs on your device. It finds areas that look like text, then compares them with what the reader could actually read. Areas it could not read are listed as "Unread text" and set to Remove. You review each one like any other finding.
How to do it with Sumi
- Drop the scanned document into the app and let the scan reader finish.
- In the scan card, turn on "Find handwriting and signatures". The first time, it downloads up to 32 MB from this site and keeps it for offline use.
- Check the Unread text group. Each box sits on a signature, a note or a stamp.
- Switch to Keep anything that should stay, such as a signature the recipient must see.
- Preview, then Redact & download.
How to check the result in 10 seconds
Look at each black box in the downloaded file at 200% zoom. No ink from the handwriting should show around the edges.
Limits
Sumi boxes handwriting, it doesn't read it. A handwritten name won't appear in the Name group, only as an unread area, so review those boxes carefully.
Questions
Is this feature free?
Yes, like every feature, for documents up to 10 pages.
Why is it off by default?
Because it downloads extra files the first time. Nothing is downloaded unless you turn it on.
Does the detector send my document anywhere?
No. It runs in your browser, like the rest of Sumi.
