Is it safe to upload your tax return to ChatGPT?
Tax forms are confusing, and an AI is a patient explainer: "which box does this income go in?", "why is my refund lower this year?". A tax return or notice is also the one document that gathers your tax identifier, your full income, your household and often your bank account.
What is on a tax return or notice
- your tax identification number and the notice or reference number;
- names and dates of birth of everyone in the household: partner, children, dependants;
- every source of income, deductions, charitable gifts (which can reveal beliefs), and the tax due;
- the bank account used for refunds or direct debits, and your address.
What the AI needs to answer you
Tax questions depend on the country, the tax year, the box or line, the amounts and your situation in words ("married, two children, one rental property"). Identifiers and names do not change the rule that applies. Keep the figures you are asking about, tag the rest.
What can go wrong
Tax numbers combined with a name and address are what tax-refund scams and identity fraud look for. Turning off training does not remove the conversation: OpenAI explains that with "Improve the model for everyone" off, chats are not used for training but still appear in your history (OpenAI). In some countries, a tax number plus a notice reference is enough to look up a notice online, which is exactly why landlords ask for them.
A safe way to ask
- Copy the lines you are asking about, or open the PDF, in Hide personal data before ChatGPT.
- Tag your tax number, the notice reference, names, birth dates and bank details. Add your employer or landlord's name in "Also replace" if they appear.
- Ask with the country and year: "For the 2025 French income tax, where do I declare this freelance income?"
- Check the answer against the tax authority's own guidance before you file.
When not to use an AI at all
Do not let a chatbot fill in or submit your return on the official site, and never give it your tax account login. For a disputed assessment or a deadline you might miss, contact the tax office or an accountant: an AI can misstate rules that change every year.
Questions
Does a Temporary Chat solve the problem?
It keeps the chat out of training, and OpenAI says it may still keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety (OpenAI). Your data still leaves your device, so tag it first anyway.
Can I keep the amounts?
Yes, if the question is about them. Amounts without a name or tax number say little about who you are.
What about my children's names on the form?
Tag them. "Two children aged 7 and 10" gives the AI everything a family-related tax rule needs.
Is the answer reliable?
Use it to understand, not to decide. Tax rules change each year and differ by country; the tax authority's guidance is the reference.
