Is it safe to upload your payslip to ChatGPT?
Asking an AI to explain a payslip line or check your overtime is a good use of it. Uploading the payslip as it is hands over far more than the question needs: your identity, your employer, your tax or social security number and your exact salary, in one file.
What is on a payslip
- your full name and home address, often your employee number and start date;
- a national identifier: social security, National Insurance or tax number depending on the country;
- your employer and its registration numbers, which say where you work;
- sometimes the bank account your salary is paid into;
- and the figures: gross and net pay, hours, overtime, deductions, tax withheld, year-to-date totals.
What the AI needs to answer you
Questions like "is my overtime paid at the right rate?", "why did my net pay drop?" or "what is this deduction?" depend on the figures, the line labels and the dates. Your name, address, identifier and employer name change nothing in the answer. Replace them, keep the numbers.
What can go wrong
Once uploaded, the file is stored with your account like any chat, and you decide nothing about it from then on. Training is only one part: ChatGPT lets you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Settings, Data controls (OpenAI), but the conversation is still kept in your history, reachable by anyone who gets into your account, and covered by whatever legal holds apply to the provider. France's data protection authority, the CNIL, gives a plain rule for public chatbots: never share confidential information such as personal data (CNIL, July 2024, our translation).
A safe way to ask
- Open Hide personal data before ChatGPT and paste the payslip text, or open the PDF. It is read in your browser.
- Check the list: your name, number, address and bank details become tags like [NAME 1] and [IBAN 1]. Add your employer's name in "Also replace" if you want it hidden too.
- Copy the result into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with your question, and ask it to keep the tags as they are.
- Paste the answer back into step 3 of the tool to see your real details in it again.
When not to use an AI at all
If you think you are being underpaid, an AI can help you understand the lines, but the check that counts comes from your payroll department, a union representative or an employment adviser. If the payslip is a scan or a photo, the tool cannot read it: black out the details in the Sumi app first, then upload the redacted copy as an image.
Questions
Does ChatGPT train on my payslip?
Not if you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data controls, or use a Temporary Chat, which OpenAI says is not used for training but may be kept for up to 30 days (OpenAI). Training is not the only issue though: the data still leaves your hands.
Can the AI still check my overtime without my name?
Yes. Rates, hours and amounts are what it calculates with. Tags such as [NAME 1] do not change the arithmetic.
Should I hide my salary too?
Only if the question does not need it. For "is my net pay correct?" the AI needs the amounts. For "what does this abbreviation mean?" you can paste just that line.
Is my payslip sent to Sumi when I use the tool?
No. Detection and tagging run in your browser tab. Load the page, turn your Wi-Fi off, and it still works.
